Clipper Ship Study, 1875
The Torrens
The Torrens was a real passenger clipper on the route between England and Adelaide. Here it is shown under full sail, with the rigging recorded line by line and the sea deliberately subdued so the ship remains the undisputed subject. Hand colouring separates sail, hull and water without obscuring the printed detail. This is not a generic maritime scene but a portrait of a named vessel, preserving the identity and engineering of a ship built for speed.
