Profile Portrait, c. 1840
The Silhouette
Her name has been lost but her profile has not. One continuous cut records forehead, nose, lips and chin with no possibility of shading or correction. Painted details at the hair and collar then return just enough individuality to the black shape. The maker and sitter are not identified. That absence is part of the work's power: a private likeness has survived long after its family context, reduced to the exact contour by which one person was once recognised.
