Four Botanical Plates, 1851
The Rhododendrons, a Set of Four
Sold as a set of 4
Walter Hood Fitch drew these rhododendrons for Joseph Dalton Hooker's study of plants collected in the Sikkim Himalaya. Their beauty is inseparable from their accuracy: each flower, leaf and stem had to be useful to botanists as well as convincing to the eye. Lithography gives the petals a softness that engraved line could not, while hand colouring distinguishes raspberry, rose, coral and white. Kept as a set, the four plates preserve both a scientific record and an extraordinary feat of botanical illustration.
Sold as a set of four. Hung two by two they make an instant gallery wall and they are just as good in a long row down a hallway.
