Portrait of a Young Woman
She looks directly out of the image with none of the usual social signals of portraiture: no smile, no theatrical pose and no elaborate setting. The white dress is softly modelled against a flat green-grey ground, making the face feel startlingly immediate. This is a printed portrait after a painting, not an original oil and its maker has not yet been identified. The substantial old wooden frame gives the modest image the physical presence of a formal family portrait.
