Two Botanical Plates, 18th century
Palm and Banana, a Pair
Sold as a pair
These plates were made to identify plants accurately, but their dedications place them firmly inside the world of patronage and collecting. Fine engraved lines describe leaf, trunk and fruit before transparent colour gives each specimen its living form. One bears a dedication to Frederick, Prince of Wales and the other to the Duke of Grafton. Together they are both botanical documents and records of an era when knowledge, travel and status were tightly connected.
Sold as a pair. Side by side with a hand's width between them, they read as one wide botanical panel.
